As Apple’s Inc.’s App Store for the iPhone and iPod Touch approaches one billion downloads, heads are turning within the games industry. On any given day, six to eight of the top ten apps downloaded for the iPhone or iPod Touch are games. Some of them are free, but others are priced between 99c and $10, with Apple taking a 30 percent cut.

Some elements within the games industry are taking time out from creating blockbuster titles with cutting edge graphics and gameplay features, developed for consoles and PC, and starting to focus on developing for the iPhone/iPod platform, and more importantly, studying the thousands of games that exist already in the App Store to see what “works” on the platform.

The transition of the iPhone/iPod Touch into handheld gaming devices was more-or-less unexpected when they launched, at least to the level they have achieved. “The iPhone has changed everything,” said Neil Young, a game developer who left Electronic Arts to found Ngmoco, a San…

Verizon (NYSE: VZ) Wireless is preparing to roll out an over-the-air software update for the touch-screen BlackBerry Storm that should fix multiple bugs and will add a few features.

The update will be known as 4.7.0.113, and it will be the first major update since December. The Storm was highly anticipated when it was released last November because it promised to marry the robust messaging functionality of a BlackBerry with the large display and multimedia functionality of an iPhone. The device sold well at launch, but it shipped with multiple software glitches, which led to mixed reviews.
The latest software update is expected to fix numerous bugs, including glitches that would cause the device to freeze when using voice dialing, as well as a bug that caused the display to show small, multicolored dots across the entire screen. The firmware also will bring some improvements and new functionality, including letting users have a full QWERTY keyboard in portrait mode, and boosted…

Online retailer Buy.com has begun sales of “never-locked” iPhone 3G units, although it is unclear exactly where the units are from or whether they are protected by Apple’s standard one-year warranty. The units, which are listed as 16GB models but without any color specification, are priced at $800 each; a video accompanying the listing says the iPhones come from “overseas,” and may include instructions and other materials printed in Italian or some other non-English language. Confusingly, though both the video and the top portion of the listing indicate that the phones include the “Apple guarantee,” a separate block of text farther down the page indicates the phone “can only be returned to the distributor under” a “30 Day Limited Warranty.” Finally, although the page states that the phone can be used with T-Mobile in the U.S., T-Mobile’s 3G network operates on a different frequency than those supported by the iPhone 3G, meaning the device would be limited to standard…
