Tuesday marked the official unveiling of Bluetooth Core Specification Version 3.0 + High Speed (HS) , the next iteration of the personal area networking technology.
The revision aims to improve the speed of data transmission by harnessing the power of 802.11 connections, borrowing part of their bandwidth to transmit large files.
Major chip manufacturers such as Broadcom and Atheros have already finalized and released chips based on the specification, but consumer products featuring Bluetooth 3.0 won’t be available at least until the end of the year. However, according to Bluetooth SIG chief Mike Foley, “any phone or computer that has Bluetooth 2.1+EDR and a 802.11 G card may be able to be updated to Bluetooth 3.0 via driver, firmware, or software update” meaning millions of existing cell phones and computers can take advantage of the new features.
